VGGM is an organisation addressing many of the Public Health tasks in the province of Gelderland, the Netherlands. The Public Health Services deals mainly with preventive medicine on a local level. The fields of interest are youth health care, infectious diseases, environmental medicine, school health care, health education, epidemiology, ambulance services. More than 500 people are employed at the Veiligheids- en Gezondheidsregio Gelderland Midden. The department of Environmental Medicine contributes to HELIX and has longstanding experience in dealing with environmental health problems. The Netherlands was the first country in Europe where physicians were trained in environmental health. These consultants deal with a wide range of environmental problems and have build up a strong professional network of scientists, policy-makers, advocates, educators and other stakeholders. The Department of Environmental Medicine has additional employees, who have been trained as environmental health scientist at the University of Maastricht or the Radboud University Nijmegen.
At policy level the department contributes to a large portfolio of topics in public health, including child health, noise, green natural environment. VGGM also participates in the green space and health focused PHENOTYPE project.
